I honestly don't see it as a big deal, similar to the Bennett burn in the playoff year.
Jesse P is struggling this year, but now you get to burn a year of his contract without gaudy numbers.
Bennett had a year gone with essentially no numbers, then a 35 season potentially followed by what looks like another 35 point season. Without that burn year, he could have potentially gone 35, 35 and then maybe a big boost to say 60 next year and with it a very different contract than what he's going to sign this summer as it looks.
Monahan had three productive years and the Flames had to pay up to keep him.
I think upper roster players (prospects) off to slow starts get hurt more by the burned year than the team does.
