The fact is that the Flames are only 3 deep on the blueline. It's an area that they have to upgrade, they need another top 4 defenceman, but they also can't acquire him until after the expansion draft.
You could argue Engelland is a better partner for Brodie, but then you leave Wideman with Jokipakka which would be a nightmare.

I agreee Wideman has been pretty decent (far better than the criticism he gets). And no, he's not worth his salary and there are better #4 defencemen (not on the Flames though). IMO Engelland doesn't suit Brodie as well as Wideman. Also, as you point out, Wideman is probably a worse #5-6 than a #4.
Frankly, finding a #4 can be overrated. Who was the #4 playing with the Habs' big 3 all those great years? Bill Nyrop?
