Also, I watched hockey back then. Big open-ice hits were common. Play carried on. Maybe at the next stoppage there would be some pushing and beaking off. Not showing that a clean hit affected you or your team was part of the ethos of the game.
Dirty hits were another matter entirely. But in today's NHL, the players don't seem to distinguish between the two.

With the attack equipment worn does it really matter if you are injured with a clean hit? Any big hit has a much higher chance of inflicting an injury than they used to.
