I usually go with USPS when ordering from the States for non-fragile, in-expensive items. The problem with USPS is that items insured will no longer be insured once it crosses the Canadian border and falls into the hands of Canada Post, because of the switch of handler. So essentially, anything that happens to your package on Canadian soil, you're SOL.
Because UPS/Fedex will handle the delivery end to end, insurance stays in effect all the way to your door. You can avoid brokerage fees with UPS/Fedex if you upgrade to Expedited shipping. Expedited shipping includes all fees except for duty and taxes. It can be expensive though.
