The problem with the term "field house" is that there's no single definition of what it means. Originally, it was used to describe the equipment shack next to a sports field. Then, the term became most commonly used for large gymnasiums, usually at Colleges in the US. This is how the term is still most commonly used.
One thing that has always bugged me when I hear comments about all the different smaller cities that have "field houses" when Calgary has none, is that they're not talking about the same thing.

If you look at the buildings mentioned, most of them have about the same amenities as the Talisman Centre (or whatever its new name is) in Calgary.
As far as I can tell, none of the ones listed have a full 400m running track (most are 200m, which is the same as the Talisman Centre and the Jack Simpson Gym) and the new field house at Commonwealth in Edmonton is the only one with an indoor turf field, and it's only a half field.
