There was only one story of $1000 last year, an Edmonton man who had Uber drive him around for an hour. Surge pricing is a concern and probably makes it more expensive than a cab, but anyone who takes an hour long Uber trip and pretends they were never told the multiplier (then) or total cost (now) is dumb. It's impossible not to notice now, drunk or not. That same trip would have cost $250~ in a cab, so it's not even like the multiplier was outrageous.
Most importantly, if you notice the rate seems really high, wait 10-15 minutes and try again. Surge peaks and disappears pretty quickly.

Since when don't they list surge pricing?
Few weeks ago I used it and it said 1.4x surge.
