I agree with your points. His public statements and "bafoonary" appear to be well calculated and (as proven) have been quite successful with selling his policies to the base and what they want to hear.
There are a number of assessments of his campaign and, looking back, he was laying the ground work for certain "moves" months ago through a certain statement or tweet. Many of his supporters see him as playing 4D Chess, while Hillary was playing checkers.
Reminds me of a good comic I saw from last year that comes up occasionally.
