So given the above the carbon tax is here to stay.
This is an interesting question to me. Although I think the CT is a useless endeavour for doing anything to stop Climate Change, I'd support it if:
1) The tax proceeds went to funding our massive deficit
2) The poor were protected from the spike in necessities of life
3) Our pipelines get approved because people think we're doing something

I don't have much hope for 1 with the NDP in power, and it looks like 2 is taken care of. The real battle is whether our carbon tax will assuage the enviornmental hysterics, and I don't know if it will. Clearly there's a subset of extremists that will oppose TMX to the end, regardless of Northern Gateway getting axed, and regardless of our incoming carbon tax. You can argue that Trudeau only approved it because of the CT but that's just posturing, it was a good project three years ago and it's a good project now. Northern Gateway was as well. Will the Americans, Quebecers, Natives, and Extremists be more amennable to our pipelines because guys like me are paying $200 more to drive my car and heat my condo the same as I always did? I'd honestly love it if they were, but I'm skeptical.
