It actually was offside.
It is totally legal to carry the puck in backwards, if you have full possession of the puck. However, if you lift your stick off the puck while doing so, it's offside.
The EXACT same thing happened to the Flames a year or two ago - can't remember who it was but he had full possession, went in backwards, lifted his stick momentarily, then took the puck in and the Flames scored. Disallowed.
