Default Graphic Design Software

Hey all,

Can anyone recommend a good graphic design software? Part of my role at work involves creating various free-form graphic illustrations (wellbore diagrams, cross sections, etc).

For the most part I do it all in PowerPoint using their basic annotation and shape outlines. While they usually turn out pretty decent, I'm usually limited by PowerPoint's features and feel that a true graphic design program would benefit me more and make the images much better.

Can anyone recommend a good software? I've looked into Corel Draw, but really I have no idea what the best and most user friendly one might be.

Any suggestions?
