I am not sure if it is any better, but it looks like to me that he is trying to cross check him in the shoulders. Doesn't even look retaliatory to me - more that he was in his way, and by cross checking him he would gain separation. It looks like the Dillon's stick causes his cross check to ride up.
Probably worse some sort of suspension (players need to be accountable for their actions), but it is not Marty McSorley level of bad.
