Sorry. I should clarify. TFA is much better than the Phantom Menace.
After leaving the theatres, I thought the Phantom Menace was a 5-6/10 and the TFA was a 9/10. Upon later viewings the Phantom was a 3/10 and the TFA was a 6-7/10.
There's definitely a 2-3 point ratings jump caused by the hype.
The Phantom Menace is largely just an odd movie for me. It has a ton of aspects that are aimed at children. However, the main plot line is largely based around overly complex political workings that go over the heads of most adults, me included. The movie also relies heavily on CGI, which has now become totally outdated...very odd. It was cool seeing lightsabers on screen again. Now that we live in a world of Star Wars saturation, people forget how much we wanted any kind of Star Wars content. The internet was still its infancy then. We didn't have all the toys, Legos, video games, etc....I watched the DVDs, played some X-Wing/Tie Fighter, but wanted more.
