The Force Awakens was absolutely perfect!
What it did was present the introduction of a new storyline and characters by taking the old story, copying it exactly, and then transitioning that story and those characters using the story and characters that you already know and love. It was a hand-off!
Textbook stuff.
And sure, people can bitch and moan that it wasnt 'original' but the fact of the matter remains that the
vast majority of people dont and
didnt care!
People wanted Star Wars! And they got Star Wars!
And they used that lack of creativity and burned a bunch of goodwill from fairweather fans, to get the new story rolling.
This was your drug-dealer's "The first one is free."
Oh, and did I mention that they made a crap-ton of money doing it?
And a crap-ton is: "The third highest grossing film of all time."
So...lots of people seem to have enjoyed it. Despite the fact that they were played. Manipulated hard. Myself included.
But its the same as going to see a Magic Show, sometimes you want to and allow yourself to be manipulated.
