TFA isn't overly exciting but it has far less cringey moments than TPM. It also looks better.
Things in TFA that still bother me though are Leia hugging Rey, a complete stranger to her in the film, over the loss of Han Solo, and the interrogation scene between Kylo and Rey where they make constipated faces at each other for 2 minutes and she gets in his head.
I've reserved judgement on Rey's ultra fast learning/harnessing of the force until we get an explanation for her character's background in episode 8.
That all said, I'm confident R1 will be a good, fun movie thanks to the director, original trilogy timeline, darth vader, and the storyline being contained to one film.
