I've never really grasped claims like "he came in to the league/season thinking he was smarter than everyone else with a guru system", or what they could possibly be based upon. All I recall Gulutzan saying prior to the season was that he wanted to have the team playing tighter hockey as a wolf pack/five-man unit. There was never anything that outlandish or mold-breaking about what he seemed to be proposing.
I think it highlights some level of personal bias to claim that the Flames are only having success now because Gulutzan tamed his hipster coaching urges and is now simply employing time-honoured Don Cherry hockey or something. What I see, is a team that had a rough start, a coach that had to learn a bit about the team he was coaching, and a team now that's beginning to finally put all of that together (hopefully).
