I think consistency is key for players like him. Sure, you can be hammer down for 10 games, and teams love you even if you don't put up a lot of numbers, but when you disappear for 20 games after that it is very easy to bring up someone from the AHL who can easily fill your spot for a lot cheaper.
Hathaway is the same way. As long as he plays a very high intensity game, everyone loves him. But if he runs into issues doing that consistently, there are other options.
