".500" refers to points%,
not win%, because at the end of the season the only thing that matters is points%. The standings are ultimately ordered by points%. Win% is completely irrelevant when it comes to the standings.

Completely wrong.
Ex: Two teams battling for the final playoff spot have records of 40-26-16 (.488 win%) and 42-29-11 (.512 win%). The team with the lower win% makes the playoffs. Win% is irrelevant.
