FWIW, something similar played out with the Carolina Hurricanes when they came into existence. The Lethbridge Hurricanes transferred their Canadian trademark to the NHL team in 1997 according to the CIPO. I doubt the actual details of that transaction and what the WHL team received in compensation will be available anywhere.
