I also blame the disruption in the technology by which news is distributed...you have news institutions competing on the internet with fake news for the same clicks that generate ad revenue...as well has having self selecting channels of information where you only are exposed to the flavour of news that reinforces your beliefs.

The media channels are so fragmented that even if you had the highest standards, you would be competing with a cacophany of crap...

Unless big spenders in advertising choose to put their $ into ethical media outlets the business model of news media is enabling this for the foreseeable future...
