There is a reason why guys like McCain, Obama and Bush Sr. were treated nicer.
This is a really good point. Clinton was a relatively popular and successful President, but even after he left office he was made fun of, because he gave plenty of ammo. Palin was mocked for obvious reasons--but McCain never really was, because there wasn't much to make fun of there. The Obamas haven't given much reason to be made fun of (though Biden certainly has).

And let's all be honest here, Trump was being mocked in the media long before he even announced his candidacy. He has always provided plenty of material, and now he's just creating more and more with every tweet.

With regard to the media being "in the bag" for Clinton, I think that the media did believe she would win, that it wasn't much of a contest. As such, in attempts to appear "fair," they gave her "scandals" as much screen time as Trump's. Only Trump had far more scandals to deal with, so it ended up being a really false narrative in the end. Trump received thousands of hours of coverage through the primaries and the general election, and if people literally only watched CNN/ABC/NBC/CBS (not even going for Fox or MSNBC, they're each clearly partisan in their own ways), they got this false equivalency that Clinton's speeches/emails/foundation/health were just as much an issue as Trump's "foundation"/racist language/conflicts of interest/sexual harassment and assault accusations/"University"/refusal to release necessary tax information, etc, etc, etc.

I think they expected Clinton to win, so they garnered ratings by treating her as if she was just as bad as Trump, and in the end it burned them.
