High idle switch ftw. My truck idles for about 6 hours a day, usually more. Lots of equipment and whatnot being powered by it.
Just for warmups though, I give it a minute or two then go, keeping it under 2500 rpms until it comes to temp. My diesel though doesn't have supplemental grid heaters for the defrost and takes a long time to blow warm air, so if it's really cold, like -20 or worse, I can't see unless it's at least halfway to operating temperature, just fogs up. It's plugged in at that point though so still doesn't take that long, 5-10 minutes.
