I have never cheered for losses for high draft picks, won't start now.
Sure, I wanted Laine really bad on the Flames last year, but guess what? Tkachuk will go a LONG ways in helping this team win down the road too.
Flames have done very well drafting where they have been, even with the recent Monahan performance angst. This core is looking better and better.
I really disagree that this team 'needs' a top 3 or another top 5 or 6 pick (regardless of the strength of the lottery). This team just needs to form an identity, grow and mature together, and get consistency in coaching (as in, hopefully Gulutzan is the right coach and this team grows well under him).
Another top pick would not work under the cap. Sure, it would then result in the Flames trading someone else for futures and replenishing the organization, but that wouldn't do much to 'win now' (when they are contending, not now as in today).
Most of the holes will be filled organizationally. Whatever holes are left will be filled through UFA signings and/or trades.
I really do believe that this young core + the rest of the prospects organizationally (Stockton, NCAA, Junior, Europe) has the talent and diversity to contend down the road.
