I very much like the theory this was all a well devised PR stunt. The obvious tell is the location of the plant. I'm guessing a plant with 10,000 workers about to lose their jobs to Mexico, in a state with a Dem governor, would never be mentioned by Trump. One where his running mate can easily make a nice corporate welfare handout? Yup, that'll play. Of course it's ridiculous after years of whining socialism at Obama they go with about as much socialism as it gets to save jobs, but hypocrisy being revealed will be something people will just have to get used to the next four years.
And Bernie is also right that this now greenlights companies who weren't considering a Mexico move to threaten to do exactly that, in very public terms, to put all the pressure on Trump to save the jobs. Now every factory Trump doesn't save gets magnified as a failure. A short term win that opens up a long term problem. Expect corporate welfare to rise significantly under Trump, we know he doesn't want the bad PR and spending other people's money is something Trump is an expert on.
