If this was just one of those things just waiting to happen due to an underlying genetic issue, it's probably fortunate that it happened where it did and not at home or on the street. Glad to hear he is doing better.
My mother passed away from something like this when I was young. Just one of those things that you never know if or when it can happen even to a seemingly healthy person.
