A loss is a loss, and the Flames are 5 games below .500. Why the NHL refuses to go for three point total games is beyond me. Probably the belief it keeps more teams in the playoff race. Sell more tickets and make more money.

This simply isn't true.
Two teams, two similar records (according to you):
Team 1: 40 - 44 - 0 = 80 points
Team 2: 40 - 15 - 27 = 107 points
Both teams won 40 games and were 'under .500' according to the 'a loss is a loss' crowd.
But one team missed the playoffs and the other is in the race for the President's Trophy.
Yes, the above is an extreme example. But it illustrates the point: your statement is false.
An OTL is not the same as a loss, you get a point so it's more like a tie. You can call it a loss all you want, but it is very different than a loss in regulation.
