Washington D.C. was very much like that too. I was blown away how close massive, Southern plantation style, Georgian multi-million dollar homes were to arguably the worst slum I've ever seen, with what looked like a bunch of gang bangers hanging out in front of a car on blocks in front of some rundown building. It was literally no more than a couple miles, so crazy.
You can tell the middle class in the U.S. - or at least the East coast anyway - is so much smaller than it is in Canada. It's like you're either upper middle class or above, or you're straight broke. No in between. Crazy stuff down there, makes me happy I'm Canadian.
