Isn't music licensing one of the main reasons why past seasons of SNL are largely unavailable? In this day and age, even companies like Netflix struggle with getting worldwide rights to everything except their own produced content. I can't imagine anyone who was working for NBC on music licenses would have thought to negotiate perpetual or even long term rights at all, let alone outside North America, when SNL was started. The show gets broadcast and it's done -- right? Hindsight.
