Lame copycat attempt? Fans have literally always voted for a random unlikely player as long as they've had these goofy fan votes, right back to Rory Fitzpatrick getting more votes than Lidstrom. They obviously don't always get voted in, but it's just silly fun. Believe me, I don't think they should even have a fan vote in the first place, and I'm not even saying go for a Flames guy necessarily, just someone not hugely famous.
The all star game -should- be the best of the best, but the league doesn't want that, they want this all-inclusive thing where every team gets a guy there which is silly, so I find no harm in simply voting for an unlikely guy to have a nice weekend, as simple as that.
