The NDP government is considering an overhaul of Alberta’s deregulated electricity market, a major change some observers say could ultimately increase costs for consumers.
Premier Rachel Notley says her government isn’t happy with the current energy market structure, where companies sell their electricity into a provincewide pool to recover their costs and secure profits.

With electricity prices near 20-year lows due to over-supply and weak demand, the province is worried power generators cannot justify new investments in natural gas and renewable energy plants as the government phases out coal-fired facilities by 2030.

“One of the bigger problems with investment into the province as it relates to our electricity industry is the broken state of the energy-only market, in the deregulated market, that was brought in over a decade-and-a-half ago by the previous government,” Notley told reporters Thursday in Edmonton.
What the hell is happening to this place?

Ugggggggh.
