Rick is by far no Saint, but hes primarily Goal-Oriented and benevolent. He does what he does to accomplish his objective (keeping his people safe) and hes seen enough to understand the consequences of not acting.

I think hes twice stepped away from being 'The Man' and had to be brought back because the world they live in needs someone to be 'The Rick' so the rest of them dont have to and can still survive.
This explains the major difference between Rick and Negan pretty well. Rick hasn't built some luxury pad for himself with a harem of women.

The issue with Rick is that he is far from a perfect leader. He's a hothead. He's stubborn. He can be mentally weak at times. The Walking Dead world is just so f-ed up that people need a person like Rick, so he keeps getting thrust back into leadership roles. He's not perfect but the best thing around. Even the people who are close to him know that Rick is almost a figurehead or image of a leader more than anything. People like Carl, Michonne, and Daryl are way more stable than Rick, but they lack the desire/ability to be part of yet alone lead a cohesive group.

It's interesting. The main group is a bunch of loan wolves, who for whatever reason gravitate around Rick, who is a bit of a nutbar but also does put the group before himself.
