More to the point, they could vote for Rubio, Cruz, Jeb Bush or whoever they want, as long as in the end Trump ends up with less than 270 electoral votes, and Clinton stays under 270.

In that circumstance, Congress gets to pick the president from anyone in the top 5 electoral vote getters (which in this hypothetical scenario would be Trump, Clinton, Rubio, Cruz and Bush). They could then literally just pick a GOP establishment President.

This will of course not happen, because it would result in wide-spread rioting and no one would ever vote Republican ever again. If the GOP were going to just say "screw the voters, we're not putting Trump in the white house", they would have done it when he won the nomination.
