As Jiri said, Ferland is the guy you add to even out a bigger trade (if you're trading him at all).
Trading Ferland for a 3rd round pick is awful management, he's young and still learning. He might not turn out great, but trading young player for a pick with a low chance of becoming equally good is bad. Cheap contract, has decent hands and can play the body. That's not a guy you give away for a maybe.
