Our way of life in the west is frail. Democracy is frail. It must be protected and guarded. Freedom in the political landscape depends on honesty in our elected representatives and those (beaurocrats) who stand behind them. When we have officials that value business interests over honestly we begin down a slippery slope. Look at Gary Mar in the Alberta legislature for instance. It becomes public knowledge that he gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to a political friend and it hits the front page. Nothing is done. No charges laid. No investigation. The story just gets pushed farther and farther back in the front section of the newspaper until it blends in with the white noise of previous blunders. Sponsorship scandal. Gun registry. Helicopter contracts. Partonage debacles. Public works scandal. When does is end? Does anyone ever get held accountable? Do we just resign ourselves to the scandal and corruption?
I read once that democracy depends soley on the trust of the people. Just like a banking scandal. If enough people yank their savings a bank will fail. Can we afford to see a 'run' on our confidence in our respective governments?
