I don't remember the Mario comparisons, but the hype was off the charts insane at the time. In my time of following the draft I can only think of a handful of players more hyped than Daigle. Lindros, Crosby, McDavid and maybe Ovechkin. He was absolutely expected to become a huge star and be one of the faces of the NHL, there was never a doubt about it. In the end, he had the brain, the skating and the playmaking but no one could motivate him to work for it or go to the tough areas. Always going through the motions, and dreaming of an acting career, he squandered his gifts because he was too lazy and indifferent. He could've been in the Yzerman/Sakic tier had he possessed the drive of those superstars IMO.
