He was also in agreement with Trump on some of his isolationist views, so he may have been able to collect some of those supporters.
Hard to say how it would have turned out.
I do wonder what happens when he pulls out of NAFTA. I didn't like the deal originally, but we are far too invested in it now. Or if he steps away from NATO if every other country doesn't start contributing 2% of their GDP. It could really change the power distribution globally. I expect other more minor powers to pick up the leavings (China, Russia, India, Pakistan, the EU).
