(yes. I understand how LTIR works. But again, if that cap relief is going to Grossmann - it is not cap relief. And by assigning him to Stockton, it is no longer cap relief at all while simultaneously NOT being salary relief)

The LTIR relief is calculated from the beginning of the season because that is when Smid went on LTIR. They know he is going to be gone for the entire year so to maximize the LTIR available you want to be as close to the cap as possible, hence Grossmann. His signing was to get to as close to the cap as possible so almost all of Smid's 3.5 million would be LTIR cap relief that they can go over the cap. Bottom line, this maneuver allows the Flames to pick up a player with around 2.75M cap hit at the deadline instead of 2.18M. That is the benefit.
