I would rather that the Flames sign a depth defencemen than not sign one and find themselves having to play Giordano and Brodie north of 25 minutes a game for a long stretch. People also forget that Grossman was 'decent' if unspectacular during the preseason. 500K is nothing.
We also don't know if Treliving tried to find other depth defencemen to sign. Nakladal stated that the Flames were trying to work something out with him as well. The Gaudreau negotiations interfered with that. They found a guy with NHL experience and who brought a different element to the team, and who was willing to sign for so cheap and allow the Flames to get extremely close to the cap in order to maximize the LTIR benefit.

Wish Grossman the best, and hope a team picks him off and he has a chance to continue his NHL career, and if not, I wish him the best in his next chapter on life.
