Beating the tar out of Martin is pretty much par for the course, and it's what Martin gets paid for. That probably shouldn't cause anyone to bat an eye. The question is whether someone decides that an eye for an eye means targeting Matthews, or Marner, or Nylander. This is why you don't try to beat up on a rookie.
As noted, it was a tough spot because of his history - either they throw the book at him or give him nothing. There wasn't really room for a middle ground there. The fact that it's the Leafs and the fact that Sedin seems to be okay is the finger on the scale that causes it to tilt towards "no foul".
By the way, I wish people wouldn't post still shots of hits, especially grainy ones like that one. They provide nothing but misleading information.

Come on, that's b.s. The "Misleading" info comes from people seeing the hit once and jumping to conclusions. The still photo was point of contact. Much better than some of the hilarious recreations I've read.
