This is how the media works. The thing with the Clinton email story is that it continues to trickle out as a teaser instead of just a full blown and completely solved scandal. Comey, Podesta emails, DNC leaks, rogue FBI agents. New information seems to come down every minute of every day and that is why this continues to be in the news over and over again.

I mean Fox news (Fox!!) apologized for reporting about impending indictments when it was baloney, but that didn't result in every word on the front page of national newspapers being about the apology.
And newspapers have been the responsible ones in this campaign by far.
Polls show that the majority of people do not actually understand the email issue and have drawn the incorrect conclusions about it. Since they get their information about it from the media, the media haven't done an adequate job of presenting facts in context.
I heard on one podcast put it this way.. the media strives to communicate the truth, and strives to be balanced. Trump feels the media is rigged because of their attempt to present the truth which highlights his compulsive lying. But the real problem is the media seems to place balance even ahead of truth, which results in false equivalencies.
When people could see them both, either in the debates or the conventions (could easily compare/contrast the speeches and everyone was watching) Clinton jumped ahead. Then as things went on and the media presents a 'balanced' view Trump gets normalized and things tighten.

Two things here - the media isn't some autonomous single voice, it is many voices and it seems like many organizations have picked sides. In the Podesta emails in particular, it confirms what many have suspected all along. Collusion between political candidates and media. Feeding eachother information, stories, narratives and talking points. Sadly this perception has affected liberal media much more than conservative media during this election cycle because of where the leaks have originated from. I'm sure we would probably see the RNC feeding talking points to guys like Rush, but the reality is, we have only seen one side.
I think to simply play it off as "making sausage", as posters like New Era continue to do is doing more harm than good. That is why sites like Breitbart are probably having record numbers of hits, because people feel that in order to get a less biased story or to see both sides, they need to turn to those sites instead of just going to CNN. Which of course is doing a whole lot of harm as well, because those sites have their own agendas and perhaps even more sinister motives.
The major media networks, which seemed to have portrayed Clinton in a much more positive light than she deserves this election cycle with little acknowledgement or downplaying of her indiscretions combined with many of the leaks have caused this fundamental distrust. That is why people continue to turn elsewhere and where part of this false equivalency narrative continues to come up.
