From business travel in the midwest the Cubs always have been really popular as well. It's not just Chicago. No love for White Sox, Twins, Brewers from my travels. Lovable Losers fit the bill perfectly until last night.
I'm sure someone mentioned this already but in the 70s, 80s, and most of the 90s WGN was a superstation and broadcast almost like network TV in the states IIRC. A generation of Cubs fans were created by default since you could always watch a Cubs game. They were everywhere I'm told.
