I get the Yankees popularity over the Mets based on their past success and longer history but never fully understood the Cubs popularity over the White Sox especially after the Sox won in 2005. I was in Chicago in 2005 after the Sox win and it wasn't a huge story. They had a long run without a World Series as well. Blackhawks wins were bigger news.
From business travel in the midwest the Cubs always have been really popular as well. It's not just Chicago. No love for White Sox, Twins, Brewers from my travels. Lovable Losers fit the bill perfectly until last night.
