He has the mentality and the body type to be able to skate through people once he is fully developed. You don't want him to get away from that, either consciously (by training him to go around people) or unconsciously (by him losing the confidence to do those things because he isn't yet physically developed enough to do them right now). He's playing well enough that he's an asset to the team, and so if he is sent down, it will be because the team thinks it will be better for his development. I hope he can work on his foot speed no matter where he goes. The Flames don't have enough quick players.
