That pairing was a tire fire 2 seasons ago when Gio was hurt but I actually haven't minded it so far this season. They still don't have great possession but it's not as bad as it was in 14/15 and the coaching staff has relied on them for tough d-zone faceoffs.
Issue for the coaching staff is that Gio and Brodie have looked horrendous together so far this season and Brodie - Hamilton didn't look great (although I would have tried it for more than a game since they were good outside of two glaring mistakes that ended up in the net).
Fact of the matter is that Brodie hasn't looked good with whoever he has played with this season and he has the team worst Corsi% and GA to show for it.
