I would take that with the proverbial grain of salt.

This is obviously a guy who likes attention and likes to provoke people (going around wearing a Trump hat in Canada says enough about that, there's really no other reason to walk around in what is a pretty ugly cap), and now has a story that also boosts his political narrative. When something fits one narrative too nicely...

From his own words I would also pretty safely assume he wasn't attacked for wearing a hat, but because he provoked someone verbally. Probably unintentionally, but still. So basically I'm calling the guy a dick who is now shocked that being a dick can bring on physical violence.

It's not okay that being a dick verbally can bring on physical violence. I'm okay with it being news, because stuff like this is news too rarel.

But it doesn't really sound like it's about the hat. And I wouldn't be so sure it's really about politics even.
