I understand that Calgary's poor defense has led to many breakaways over the past 2 days. With McDavid's speed, breakaways are even more common (and deadly).
But hasn't this "breakaway" style been somewhat regular for Edmonton over the past few years? Hall was also fast, and he attempted to do the same thing.
Everyone is saying that Calgary's poor defense/coaching system is what has led to these odd-man rushes. But I think it's more of a mixture between Edmonton's style and Calgary's defensive lapses.
This breakaway style is clearly beatable, as Edmonton has been no good for a number of years. McDavid is very fast and skilled, but breakaways are just one trick. One trick ponies are relatively easy to stop. McDavid is great in many areas of the game, but over time, I'm sure Calgary will learn to adjust to his tendencies.
