Well the year they went 13-3 they had Johnny Morton who is an upgrade on anyone they have now at receiver. Eddie Kennison isn't getting any younger, and never was one to scare anyone. Certainly a game breaking receiver might be needed now to try and get some of the attention off the Chiefs running game.

The Chiefs entire offensive scheme in the Vermeil/Saunders era traced back to their offensive line which used to be solid at all 5 spots. Welbourne, Tait, Weigman, Shields, and Roaf than last year when they had Waters in place of Tait were really solid units when at full health. As a result they could run the ball on anyone, and that set up their passing game. Also by having such a great group of 5 they could split Gonzalez out and use him as a receiver more often and move him around to create mismatches. But I do agree that Tony Richardson's absence is pretty significant. Consider that the Chiefs lost Welbourne, Richardson, Roaf, and Saunders I think they'd be having a tough time offensively even if Green was healthy.

This year the Chiefs have a different co-ordinator in Paul Hacket who is very predictable, and don't have the same tackles they used to have. I think the ability of the offensive line and an offensive scheme that took advantage of where the talented players was helped disguise the Chiefs weakness at WR. Now that the talent on the line isn't what it was, and the scheme is pretty predictable, it looks like a bit more talent would help at the WR position. The last couple drafts the Chiefs looked to defence with their top picks. Maybe they can look at the offensive side of the ball now as they need to get younger on that side of the game.
