Can you provide some examples where teams have off-loaded their stars at the right time?
I don't see what one can really do where you have a player who has fully committed to your team and then you drop them because you offered too much term making them a near-dead or declining asset in part because of your own contract agreement. The Sedins are holding up well but their days are numbered.
How should this be managed?
And an edit: 6 years guaranteed comes with a lot of risk from the owners. That means Johnny gets that money no matter what. Everybody assumes he's going to get better, that is not guaranteed.
