Combine that with it's confirming an existing perception. If it'd been 'out of character' it'd be bad but less so.

It's the Ray Rice Syndrome.
Rice had been suspended 2 games after admitting he punched his wife in the face in an elevator which knocked her out and had him indicted for assault charges.
6 months later an actual video of the incident is released and all of a sudden he has his contract terminated by his team and is then suspended indefinately by the NFL.
What changed? Nothing other than the fact that people now saw what happened instead of hearing/reading about it.
It's a really odd thing that happens when actually seeing things/facts as opposed to just knowing them.
