Wideman is in the last year of what could be his last contract. He's been squeezed out of the top 4 and won't get minutes, leading to low interest for him next summer.
Yakupov has been in struggle city for the last 4 years and desperately needs a change of scenery.
The Flames are coming out of their rebuild and they need some more young talent, especially a shoot-first RW that can skate.
The Oilers need a RHS PPQB that isn't locked up on crazy term or that has crazy high trade value, since they've almost run out of assets to trade.
It would have been perfect for all parties, but thanks to the rivalry, nobody wins.

I completely agree with this. I think it's actually a pretty good deal for both sides. Plus, if we're still hoping to sign Russell, moving Wideman would allow for Kulak to stay in the lineup.
