Just bad luck.
I really dislike Gudas, and think he's a dirty player, but Gudas had already initiated the hit when Vessey made the pivot.
More often then not on a play like that, the player in Vessey's position would continue around the boards behind the net, in which case, Gudas's hit would have been an every day play.
